Really? No fee if you convert to an Amazon gift card? That beats rolling it myself, and I’m too cheap to give coinstar 6%.

Yeah, the fee is only so the store can give you cash. No cash involved= no reason for the store to get involved.

I didn’t know that you even could avoid the fee until recently. So this time, I cashed in for a Home Depot gift card. It didn’t last long. ;)

Yup! You can go on their website and see which stores do this since not all will. And some stores only offer some gift cards.

But it’s not just amazon. GameStop, home depot, gas, toys R us... a whole bunch off cool things. All gift cards offer no fees!

My sister’s stepdad is a high-up at Constar in Seattle. Really good business ethics and business model.

How do they afford to do this/ what do they do with the coins?

Ever year I dump my change jar for my hunting trip. Best part is my local bank has a similar machine which is loud as hell. So standing in the quiet bank with people doing their business and I’m standing making as much noise as someone attacking a beanbag full of coins with a lawn mower

Stores keep the 6% as a way of letting the Coinstar in the store, Coinstar makes a whole lot of money by having companies like Amazon, Apple, Lowe’s, etc., put their logo on the screen to, “sell,” gift-cards. They also make a lot of money by leasing the machines to people/places.

Heck, 6% is better than here. I think in Indiana they take something like 9.9% or 8.9%.

Me either! This is great...people look at you weird if you give them a roll of coins. Sometimes they want to open the rolls to make sure you didn’t put something else inside.

I’ve been avoid CoinStar for a long time, just because I didn’t want to pay some ridiculous fee. Are coin-rolls free at the bank or something? I’ve seen them at the store, but buying those would probably be similar in price to paying some fee.

(Eh, I guess it doesn’t matter now. Free rolls or not, I’m going to be using CoinStar more often anyway...)

Same here.. Coin rolls are free from your bank. I hardly ever use a teller for anything though. Maybe once every 2 years. The dollar store has a bag of rolls for $1.

That’s not bad. (Still gonna use the machine now, though.)

I’ve never paid for something with a coin-roll before, but I have gotten funny looks for paying with things like dollar coins and $2 bills. “I don’t even know where to put this in my drawer” You still have a space for checks, don’t you?

(My local recycle yard LOVES handing out those oddball currencies. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten any $1 bills from a scrap run.)

I use them to pay for gas mostly. I feel weird carrying a bunch of rolls into the bank to be converted. I hate to carry change, so I throw it in a jar each night. I’ll be using the machine too now that I know you can get gift cards to Amazon.
